IMAGINING THE SUBSURFACE OF THE AREA BETWEEN THE GREAT HALL AND THE UNIVERSITY HALL, KNUST

Electromagnetic profiling using the Geonics EM34-3 conductivity metre has been carried out

in the area between the Great Hall and the University Hall of KNUST to map the subsurface

structures. The EM equipment was operated in the horizontal dipole (HD) and vertical dipole

(VD) modes with a 10 m intercoil spacing, probing to depths of 7.5 m and 15 m respectively

and 20 m intercoil spacing also probing to depths of 15 m and 30 m respectively. The results

revealed that the apparent conductivity values of the area are within the range of

3 to 31 mSm-1. In addition to the qualitative analysis of the profiling results, the data from the

four (4) different depths were collated and processed into four (4) contour maps which

showed the areas of high and low conductivity values were also generated from the collation

of the profile data. The contour maps showed that the zone closer to the Great Hall were more

conductive, this could partly be due to the bare wires found in that portion of the project area.
